There's something uniquely pleasurable about listening to vinyl, something that digital media can't reproduce in quite the same way. However most hi-fi amplifiers won't let you plug in a turntable directly. You need to connect via a phono stage (also known as a phono preamp) to make the very small signal from the turntable powerful enough for your main amp to work with.

But it's very easy to add noise at this stage, which is why we've designed the CP1 using premium components chosen for exceptional accuracy, amplifying the signal without distorting it.

The CP1 works with all popular turntables that use a Moving Magnet cartridge (the stylus or needle). For a high-end audiophile turntable with a Moving Coil cartridge see the CP2 premium phono stage which works with both types.

  • Phono pre-amplifier with moving magnet (MM) input stage
  • Single-ended ‘Class A’ gain stage with audiophile passive RIAA equalisation
  • Acoustically damped full metal chassis with thick brushed aluminium front panel
  • Balance control for fine correction of cartridge imbalance
  • Discrete transistors for the all-important input stages instead of the more common integrated circuits
  • Eco-friendly <1W Standby power consumption
  • Available in black

There's something uniquely pleasurable about listening to vinyl, something that digital media can't reproduce in quite the same way. However most hi-fi amplifiers won't let you plug in a turntable directly. You need to connect via a phono stage (also known as a phono preamp) to make the very small signal from the turntable powerful enough for your main amp to work with. But it's very easy to add noise at this stage, which is why we've designed the CP2 using premium components chosen for exceptional accuracy, amplifying the signal without distorting it.

The CP2 works with all turntables, whichever type of cartridge they use. Like the CP1 it works with popular Moving Magnet cartridges. But it also works with Moving Coil cartridges found in the highest-end audiophile turntables offering even more accuracy and detail than Moving Magnet. Even if your amplifier does have a built-in phono stage, it's well worth bypassing it using the CP2 to deliver much greater depth and detail.

Audio circuitry has been refined with multiple transistors wired in parallel ensuring the lowest possible distortion and noise. A copper shield provides further protection to this extremely sensitive part of the circuitry, limiting the noise that can be injected into the signal. This is especially important with a Moving Coil cartridge because its signal is even quieter and more delicate than Moving Magnet, so it needs even more amplification.

Love vinyl? Make the most of any turntable, including the most high-end audiophile models

Adding a turntable to your system is like having a log fire - a radiator may warm you up but you wouldn't want to sit and watch it. There's something uniquely pleasurable about listening to vinyl, something that digital media can't reproduce in quite the same way. While the latest digital formats sound incredible, there's detail and warmth that can't always be expressed in 0s and 1s, crackle that adds character, and live music simply comes to life. And the Azur 651P makes the very most of vinyl, whatever your deck. It even works with Moving Coil cartridges found in the highest of high-end audiophile turntables.

Moving Coil compatible

Works with Moving Coil, the audiophile's cartridge of choice, offering even more accuracy and detail than Moving Magnet.

Advanced amplification

Audio circuitry has been refined with multiple transistors wired in parallel ensuring the lowest possible distortion and noise. A copper shield provides further protection to this extremely sensitive part of the circuitry, limiting the noise that can be injected into the signal. This is especially important with a Moving Coil cartridge because its signal is even quieter and more delicate than Moving Magnet, so it needs even more amplification.

Premium components

High-spec multi-parallel capacitors achieve exceptional RIAA accuracy - the industry standard for reproducing vinyl recordings. While a highly accurate, subsonic filter removes the common problem of unwanted low-frequencies that are inaudible but can damage subwoofers.

Total power off

In line with Cambridge Audio's commitment to the environment, a power switch cuts energy consumption to zero when not in use.

Part No.  Elevator
Description  Graham Slee Elevator EXP & PSU1
 Brand  Graham Slee
 RRP  $ 1399
 Image Image
Product Notes The Elevator EXP Pre Preamplifier preamplifies the signal from a conventional output moving coil phono cartridge to moving magnet cartridge sensitivity. The signal is then fed to a moving magnet phono stage as pictured right.

It's better than a step up transformer because noise cannot be induced into it, and it's far more linear making for a better bass response.

It's the electronic equivalent of a moving coil step up transformer, or as moving coil enthusiasts abbreviate it: SUT. However, a step up transformer easily picks up hum and electrical disturbances — it also consumes some of the delicate signal current to magnetize its core. What's so bad about that? Read on.

There would be nothing wrong at all if moving coil cartridges put out a flat frequency response, but being magnetic, they have a rising output - they output 100 times more 20kHz treble than they do 20Hz bass. That makes transformer design difficult — it's never going to perform at its best.

Enter the electronic solution - the Elevator EXP. It uses a technique from our Ultra-Linear "toolbox" - this time as extended open-loop frequency response, and that's something usually only available with tube amplification, but tubes can't do such low level signals.

Therefore it's hardly surprising that it does the tube sound, but without all the problems you get with tubes — it's an excellent addition for a tube phono preamp to be able to use moving coil.

But use the Elevator EXP with one of our great moving magnet phono stages (as illustrated above) and you're in for a treat! We recommend you use it with our Reflex M, Revelation M or Era Gold V phono preamps — and so do a number of reviewers!

The Elevator EXP also features 7 different preset cartridge load impedances easily selected on the front panel.

Features:
Seven different preset cartridge load impedances at your fingertips - no fiddly adjustments!
Tube like extended open-loop frequency response from our Ultra-Linear "toolbox"
Inherent reduced vinyl click and pop characteristic

Product Notes Although losing its flagship status to our Reflex M, the Era Gold V MM phono stage is still a miraculous and important milestone in MM phono stage development. Different pieces of legislation over the intervening years threatened it with extinction, but we went to great lengths to preserve its most precious attribute — that of being able to convey the depth of emotion in the music.

Designed for moving magnet, moving iron and high output moving coil cartridges, the Era Gold V MM phono stage was our very first "ultra-linear" design. In 2002, partnered with our Elevator EXP moving coil step-up amplifier, it was the best moving coil phono stage TNT reviewer, Geoff Husband, had ever heard.

Part No.  Reflex C
Description  Graham Slee Reflex C - MC & GreenPS
 Brand  Graham Slee
 RRP  $ 1250
 Image Image
Product Notes The Reflex C MC preamp is our one box solution for conventional (low) output moving coil cartridges having an output of 0.2 to 1.0 mV.

It's a MC preamp that provides that missing excitement to moving coil cartridge listening, revealing the secrets hidden in your vinyl - as well as great dynamics, delicacy and just the right amount of warmth.

Imagine a pure tube/valve solution for moving coil phono stage pre-amplification with no step-up transformer? Unfortunately tubes/valves don't have the open-loop gain and are too noisy to do moving coil pre-amplification without a step-up transformer, but now, with the Reflex C phono stage you can get the sound you're searching for - yes, that illusive tube/valve linearity, from solid state!

But how? Conventional solid state moving coil phono stage preamps have poor open-loop bandwidth which means their open-loop response is only a few tens of hertz. Negative feedback straightens out their response but in doing so it introduces phase modulation from bass frequencies upwards.

The Reflex C has more than ten times the open-loop bandwidth of a solid state moving coil phono preamp which means there's less than one tenth the phase modulation

There are many more refinements in the Reflex C phono stage, including excellent radio frequency rejection as well as the best branded components available that gel to make the most precise sound stage delivering an unbeatable moving coil musical experience.

Features:
Fast-Active preamp and equalisation technology
Latest innovative Ultra-Linear technique
Inherent reduced vinyl click and pop characteristic
Rock steady sound stage and truly 3D performance
Tube like sound

Part No.  Reflex M - Green
Description  Graham Slee Reflex M phono stage w/T48
 Brand  Graham Slee
 RRP  $ 1250
 Image Image
Product Notes "After trying every other possibility in phono stage design I always arrive back at the Reflex M design. I try to improve it, but nothing compares. I have to conclude that, for moving magnet and high output moving coil, this is the limit - the ultimate." [Graham Slee, Jan 20th 2013]

The Reflex M phono stage is for Moving Magnet, Moving Iron and High-Output Moving Coil phono cartridges in the sensitivity range 1.5 to 10mV. Click here for our moving coil version.

This latest version introduced 2012 incorporates our ultra-linear innovations making for an even more natural and dynamic signature-free sound — the way music should be.

The Reflex M phono stage makes music like no other phono stage. It's sound stage is rock steady, having both width and depth, placing the music beyond the speakers. In a great sounding system its spatial capabilities are so lifelike it can often trick the ears into layering instruments vertically too!

[click an image to see all the slides]

It uses our ultra-linear fast active phono stage technology, combined with its true small and large signal symmetrical slew-rate, to pull more music from the groove and relegate vinyl nasties like clicks and pops further into the background.

In layman's language, our fast active phono stage technology means the circuit completely "forgets" the music it reproduced 0.06 micro-seconds before. That means there is no veil over the music, nor ever can be.

Ultra-linear - as close as you can get to valves (tubes) with the reliability and repeatability of solid state - never overloads like bi-polar transistors (BJTs). The cartridge is never called on to drive the voltage amplifier stage (VAS) integrator capacitor (like it is with integrated MM/MC phono stages), so it never destroys the music's integrity enabling you to relax deeper into the music.

The Reflex M is strong on tonal perfection and low on tonal distortion, rendering each instrument and voice in its exact register, underpinned with a detailed tuneful bass.

Although there is a dedicated moving coil Reflex – the Reflex C, the Reflex M phono stage can be coupled with the Elevator EXP electronic step-up "transformer" to provide the ultimate moving coil listening experience.
